Introduction to Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS)


EBS offers persistent storage for EC2 instance.

Can be leveraged as an EC2 instance’s boot partition

Provide ability to create point-in-time snapshots of your volume.

2 volume types: Standard and Provisioned IOPS (such as database)

Life cycle:

  • Attach
  • In use
  • Create a snapshot
  • Detach
  • Delete

EBS, AMI and termination


sudo mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdf
sudo mkdir /mnt/data-store
sudo mount /dev/sdf /mnt/data-store

mount on boot
sudo nano /etc/fstab
Add this line:
/dev/sdf /mnt/data-store ext3 defaults,noatime 1 2
